Aaron Binder was sworn in as New Jersey State Treasurer after receiving unanimous confirmation from the State Senate. He had been serving in an acting capacity since Governor Sherrill took office. The Department of the Treasury, which he now leads, is one of the largest state treasury departments in the United States, with more than 3,000 employees and 13 divisions. Its responsibilities include managing the state budget, collecting and administering taxes and revenues, issuing state debt, overseeing public employee pension and health benefit plans, and investing one of the country’s largest public pension funds.
“With one of the broadest mandates of any state department, much of Treasury’s work is effectuated by public servants who bring a strong work ethic and a customer service-focused approach to solving problems,” said Treasurer Binder. “I’m proud to have built a team with a deep collective understanding of Treasury’s multi-faceted mission. I look forward to working with each of them to ensure a seamless transition as we advance Governor Sherrill’s mandate to maintain fiscal responsibility and boost affordability for residents across the Garden State.”
Binder joined the department in 2021 as deputy state treasurer. In that role he managed key offices such as Management and Budget, Revenue and Economic Analysis, and Taxation. Before this position, he worked for 16 years at the New Jersey Assembly Majority Office (AMO), including as deputy executive director. There he led efforts related to budget development, pensions and benefits for public employees, banking and insurance policy issues, transportation initiatives, and healthcare matters. Earlier in his career he held financial roles at Congreso De Latinos Unidos, Amtrak, and for Philadelphia city government.
The new leadership team under Binder includes Kavin Mistry as Deputy State Treasurer overseeing budget operations; Dennis Zeveloff as senior advisor providing support on major projects including budget proposals; Robert M. Joyce as chief of staff responsible for daily departmental operations; Keith White as assistant treasurer handling legislative affairs; Michael Kanef continuing oversight over finance-related divisions; Andrea Spalla maintaining her role over pensions and benefits; Jo-Ann Povia taking on property management duties; Jennifer Sciortino serving as deputy chief of staff focusing on communications; Deborah DePiano directing legislative affairs; Darryl Isherwood continuing his communications leadership role; Danielle Currie rounding out communications management; and Sharon Alessi providing operational continuity through multiple administrations.
These appointments reflect extensive experience across both public service sectors within New Jersey government as well as private sector backgrounds.
