Bergen County officials held a ceremony on March 12 to celebrate Women’s History Month at Two Bergen County Plaza in Hackensack. The event was organized in partnership with the Bergen County Department of Human Services, the Bergen County Commission on the Status of Women, and the Junior Commission on the Status of Women.
Women’s History Month is observed nationally each March to recognize women’s contributions across various fields. This year’s theme, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” highlights women who are advancing sustainability efforts in environmental, economic, educational, and social justice areas.
Melissa DeBartolo, Director of the Bergen County Department of Human Services, gave welcome remarks. Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco III addressed attendees by saying, “Across Bergen County and around the world, women are leading the change- through advocacy, public service, education, innovation, and community leadership. Their work is shaping stronger communities and opening doors for the generations that will follow.”
Bergen County Commissioner Germaine Ortiz also spoke at the event. “As we celebrate Women’s History Month, I am inspired by the remarkable women in our communities whose dedication and vision are driving meaningful change,” said Ortiz. “From protecting our environment to fostering education and equity, their leadership not only shapes a sustainable future but also empowers the next generation to dream bigger and lead boldly.”
The county presented Certificates of Commendation to six honorees whose work reflects this year’s theme: Debora Davidson (Executive Director, Tenafly Nature Center), Jess Horan (Educator & LGBTQ+ Advocate at Dumont High School), Yansi Fugel (Fashion Designer), Carol Peterson (Founding Member of Sustainable Bergen County Hub), Andrea Sheridan (Assistant Superintendent at Bergen County Technical Schools), and Ana Silvelo (Program Director for Wonder Girls Lyndhurst High School Chapter). The evening included a musical performance by Gina Picinic and a poetry reading by Ishika Ranka from Bergen County Academies.
Commissioner Chair Pro Tempore Dr. Joan Voss delivered closing remarks as part of an event that highlighted local leaders’ ongoing efforts toward sustainability.
