Former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman spoke to the Board of Directors of the Research & Development Council of New Jersey, focusing on the importance of research, development, and innovation for effective state leadership and long-term economic competitiveness.

Whitman discussed her experiences leading New Jersey during times of economic and technological change. She addressed topics such as sustained investment in research and development, the link between STEM education and economic growth, and the challenges governors face when balancing immediate needs with long-term innovation goals. She highlighted the need for collaboration among government, industry, and academic institutions to strengthen New Jersey’s position as a leader in innovation.

“New Jersey’s strength has always come from its people, its universities, and its research-driven industries,” said Whitman. “Prioritizing innovation and the STEM talent pipeline is a necessity to our long-term economic competitiveness. When government, academia, and industry work together with a shared vision, we create the conditions for ideas to move from the lab to the marketplace and for the next generation of leaders to thrive.”

Kim Case, executive director of the Research & Development Council of New Jersey, commented on Whitman’s remarks: “As New Jersey begins a new gubernatorial administration, Governor Whitman’s perspective was both timely and grounding. Her experience in the governor’s office provides a rare view into how governors navigate complex issues like innovation, economic development, and workforce preparedness—and how thoughtful leadership can move the state forward.”

The discussion occurred at MTF Biologics’ Edison facility during the Council’s January Board meeting. Members from various sectors gathered to discuss strategies aimed at strengthening New Jersey’s innovation ecosystem.

Attendees also toured MTF Biologics’ Edison facility. The organization is a global nonprofit based in New Jersey that works with physicians, scientists, and organ and tissue donation partners to help patients with different clinical needs. At this site, donated human tissue is prepared for use in surgeries that restore mobility, heal injuries, and save lives.
