Maine reported 39,000 job openings in June 2025, a figure unchanged from the previous month, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Acting Regional Commissioner Mark J. Maggi stated that “the job openings rate in Maine was 5.6 percent in June, unchanged from the previous month.” Nationally, the job openings rate was 4.4 percent in June and 4.6 percent in May.
The ratio of unemployed persons per job opening in Maine stood at 0.6 for June. Across the country, 25 states and the District of Columbia had ratios lower than the national average of 0.9 unemployed persons per job opening; 18 states recorded higher ratios, while seven matched the national figure.
In terms of hiring activity, Maine saw 25,000 hires and 26,000 separations during June. These numbers were consistent with May’s figures of 25,000 hires and 25,000 separations. Over the past year ending in June, monthly averages were calculated at 24,000 hires and 22,000 separations.
Of those separating from employment in Maine during June, there were 15,000 quits and 9,000 layoffs or discharges. In comparison, May saw slightly fewer quits at 14,000 but more layoffs and discharges at 10,000. On an annual basis over the last year through June, quits averaged about 13,000 per month while layoffs and discharges averaged around 8,000 monthly.
The next release of State Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey estimates is scheduled for September 17, 2025.
