Montclair State University has been recognized in the U.S. News & World Report 2026 Best Colleges rankings as one of the top national universities in the United States. The university improved its standing in several categories compared to previous years.
In the area of social mobility, which evaluates how well institutions enroll and graduate students from low-income backgrounds, Montclair ranked ninth among all national universities. This is an improvement from its twelfth place ranking last year. Among public institutions, Montclair tied for fifth nationally and for second place within New Jersey.
The university also saw gains in other categories. It rose to number 177 on the Best Value Schools list, moving up 28 spots from its position at 205 last year. Additionally, Montclair placed eighty-fourth among national public institutions.
