The New Jersey Department of Health has proposed an amendment to its hospital licensing standards regarding staffing for inpatient dialysis services. The proposed change would remove the requirement that a nephrologist be present during the initiation of a patient’s first inpatient dialysis treatment in hospitals. This adjustment aims to align hospital staffing requirements with those in other healthcare facility types regulated by the department.

The amendment appears in the January 5, 2026, issue of the New Jersey Register. The public is invited to submit written comments on the proposal until March 6, 2026. Comments can be sent electronically through nj.gov/health/legal/ecomments.shtml or by regular mail postmarked by March 6, 2026, addressed to Kimberly E. Jenkins, Director, Office of Legal and Regulatory Compliance, New Jersey Department of Health, PO Box 360, Trenton, NJ 08625-0360.

Free online access to the New Jersey Register is available through LexisNexis via the website of the New Jersey Office of Administrative Law. An unofficial copy of the Notice of Proposal can also be found on the Department’s website.
