Newark Beth Israel Medical Center held a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony on April 15 to celebrate the completion of the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey Emergency Services Pavilion.
The event marked a significant milestone for the hospital, following a $5 million donation from The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey in 2023. This contribution is the largest single commitment in Newark Beth Israel’s 125-year history and supported major renovations and expansion of its emergency department.
“Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey share a vision for delivering excellent, equitable care with compassion and respect for all patients and their families. The Foundation’s historic gift enabled a milestone transformation of our emergency department, a place that serves as the front door to our hospital for many of our patients,” said Darrell K. Terry, Sr., President and Chief Executive Officer of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey. In 2025, the medical center reported more than 101,000 emergency department visits.
The redesigned facility features an expanded space with dedicated entrances for patients and visitors, nine new adult treatment areas, three pediatric treatment spaces, fast-track suites, as well as separate waiting lounges for adults and children. The pavilion is part of Newark Strong—a $200 million project begun in 2021—to revitalize Lyons Avenue while supporting local economic development.
Amy Schechner, Board Chair at The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey said: “This project is a testament to the longstanding commitment of The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey’s partnership with Newark Beth Israel. We all at the Foundation are so proud of seeing this historic investment come to fruition in such a meaningful way and help to transform the health in the communities we both serve.”
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is an RWJBarnabas Health facility offering comprehensive care including heart transplants—over 1,200 performed—and advanced lung disease programs. It also houses Children’s Hospital of New Jersey with more than thirty specialized pediatric services.
The Healthcare Foundation was established in 1996 after NBIMC was sold to Saint Barnabas Corporation. Over its history it has awarded over $200 million in grants aimed at improving healthcare quality for underserved populations.
