Mark E. Manigan, President and Chief Executive Officer of RWJBarnabas Health, has been recognized for the second consecutive year on Becker’s Hospital Review’s annual list of CEO Influencers to Know. The recognition highlights hospital and health system CEOs who are seen as having significant influence in shaping the future of healthcare.

As head of RWJBarnabas Health, New Jersey’s largest academic health system, Manigan has led efforts focused on clinical excellence and operational alignment. According to the organization, under his leadership there has been a 67% increase in revenues since 2019 along with improvements in key quality metrics. He oversaw the development of a $2.2 billion ambulatory care network and implemented a unified operating model across the system.

Manigan also initiated a new mission and vision for RWJBarnabas Health based on “One System, One Family.” Efforts to improve workforce engagement have resulted in more than a 10% increase in employee engagement scores. The organization reports investment in social and economic determinants of health, including hiring thousands from neighborhoods described as “asset limited, income constrained, employed,” spending $370 million with diverse local vendors, and distributing over 1.5 million pounds of food through community partnerships.

He is also involved outside the organization as a member of Rutgers University’s board of governors and serves as a trustee at the Center for Great Expectations.

RWJBarnabas Health provides care to more than five million people annually through its network that includes 14 hospitals and over 700 patient care locations across New Jersey. The system partners with communities to address social needs such as hunger, housing insecurity, and economic opportunity.

The health system maintains an academic partnership with Rutgers University that includes collaboration with Rutgers Cancer Institute—the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in New Jersey—and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

With more than 44,000 employees statewide, RWJBarnabas Health is one of New Jersey’s largest private employers and contributes over $7 billion each year to the state economy. More information can be found at www.RWJBH.org.
