RWJBarnabas Health and Englewood Health have entered into a Definitive Agreement that will make Englewood Health part of RWJBarnabas Health. The two organizations expect this move to improve healthcare services for residents in Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic counties, as well as nearby communities. The completion of the transaction is subject to approval by state and federal authorities.

RWJBarnabas Health is recognized as New Jersey’s largest academic health system. It serves over five million people each year through its 14 hospitals, a workforce exceeding 45,000 employees, and 9,000 affiliated physicians across more than 700 patient care sites. Its partnership with Rutgers University includes collaborations with the Rutgers Cancer Institute—New Jersey’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center—and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

With this agreement, Englewood Health’s role as a comprehensive healthcare provider in Bergen County is expected to grow stronger. RWJBarnabas Health plans to invest significantly in Englewood facilities and expand outpatient services and community health programs currently offered by Englewood Health.

Mark E. Manigan, president and CEO of RWJBarnabas Health, stated: “Englewood Health has a long history of providing superior care to the residents of Bergen County and surrounding communities. We look to build upon this history together to enhance access to world-class academic medicine and cutting-edge cancer treatment, as well as expand community programs and vital resources for the most vulnerable. Englewood shares a perspective and culture consistent with our mission of improving and sustaining the health of all New Jersey residents. The changing healthcare landscape presents new challenges, but also great opportunities. We are eager to explore the many opportunities for collaboration signaled by this Definitive Agreement.”

Warren Geller, president and CEO for Englewood Health, said: “This transaction will ensure Englewood Health’s ability to deliver world-class care to the communities we serve in a broader way, with greater resources and more cutting-edge technologies. Our health systems are coming together under a shared goal of not just providing the best care but increasing access to that care. Through this partnership and by combining resources, we will have the ability to greatly enhance the services we provide to our communities in a way in which we would not be able to accomplish alone.”

Englewood Hospital was established in 1890. Its physician network includes more than 800 providers offering primary care, specialty care, and inpatient services at over 100 locations throughout five counties in northern New Jersey.
