On Sunday, February 15, Seton Hall University held the Rite of Sending for its OCIA candidates and catechumens. These individuals have been studying the Catholic faith since the fall semester through weekly classes organized by the Community of Saint John (CSJ). Their goal is to receive Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation after Easter.
The Rite of Sending is a step in preparing OCIA candidates and catechumens for receiving sacraments. It marks formal recognition from the candidates or catechumens, their sponsors or godparents, and the parish community that they are ready to move forward to the Rite of Election. This next rite will take place on Sunday, February 22 at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey with Cardinal Joseph Tobin.
Sister Anne Dukart, CSJ, directs Seton Hall’s OCIA program. She explained that the Rite of Sending “reassures catechumens and candidates that they have made spiritual progress and that progress is seen and affirmed by their sponsors and Godparents as well as by the local community.” She added, “The Rite is also a reminder for the Christian community that is surrounding the candidates and catechumens to continue to support them by their prayers and example.”
Father John Francis, CSJ, delivered a homily during Sunday night’s service. He told those gathered that nobody is perfect in their current state but said imperfections should not lead to despair. Instead, he encouraged everyone to bring their imperfections to Jesus with trust so that faith may grow deeper.
The timing of this event aligns with preparations for Lent at Seton Hall University. The Lenten season begins on Wednesday, February 18 with Ash Wednesday.
