Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill has nominated Aaron Binder to serve as the next leader of New Jersey’s Department of the Treasury. If confirmed, Binder will oversee the state’s budget, taxation, pensions, investments, and a department of more than 3,000 employees.

Binder has been serving as Deputy State Treasurer under Gov. Phil Murphy since December 2021. His previous roles include deputy executive director of the Assembly Majority Office during a 16-year tenure with the Assembly and Budget Director for the Assembly Budget Committee.

Sherrill stated, “Together, we will ensure that New Jerseyans’ tax dollars are being spent wisely, continue to fully fund our pension system, and work to invest in the programs that help families make ends meet. I look forward to working with Aaron to make smart financial decisions that lower costs and support our state’s economy.”

Binder expressed appreciation for his nomination: “I am honored to be Governor-elect Sherrill’s State Treasurer nominee. During my time as Deputy Treasurer, I am proud to have worked on critical efforts to lower costs for New Jerseyans, like funding the pension system and implementing property relief tax programs to lower the cost of renting or owning a home. I look forward to working with the Governor-elect to continue building fiscally responsible budgets that invest in the future of our state, lowers costs for families, and ensure that New Jerseyans’ tax dollars are being spent wisely, efficiently and are invested in the areas that matter most.”

Michele Siekerka, President and CEO of the New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA), commented on Binder’s appointment: “We have had the good fortune to work with Aaron on tax legislation over the years and have enjoyed having him as part of our events. Aaron is proven to be extremely capable of being the lead administrator of the state’s finances, with a deep knowledge and ideas on how to put the state’s best fiscal foot forward. We look forward to continuing to work with Aaron in his new capacity and we congratulate him and the incoming Sherrill administration on this excellent appointment.”

In his current role as Deputy Treasurer, Binder manages several offices within Treasury including Management and Budget; Revenue and Economic Analysis; Revenue and Enterprise Services; as well as Taxation. Before joining Treasury in 2021, he was part of leadership at AMO where he served six years as Deputy Executive Director. Over 16 years at AMO he supported key policy issues such as public employee pensions & benefits; banking & insurance; transportation; health care; along with participating in budget negotiations. Earlier positions included financial roles at Congreso De Latinos Unidos, Amtrak, and City of Philadelphia.
