The Valley Hospital has announced the acquisition of the da Vinci 5 Surgical System, the latest robotic surgical technology developed by Intuitive Surgical. This system is designed for minimally invasive procedures in specialties such as gynecology, urology, and bariatrics, with further applications in cardiothoracic, colorectal, and general surgery.
The da Vinci 5 introduces over 150 improvements aimed at enhancing precision and accuracy during surgery. One notable advancement is its “Force Feedback” technology, which allows surgeons to sense the amount of pressure applied to tissue through their manual controls. This feature enables a more delicate approach when necessary to minimize tissue trauma while maintaining clinical effectiveness.
In addition to tactile feedback, the new system can collect and analyze data from surgeries. This capability supports ongoing skill development for surgeons and promotes continuous improvement in surgical techniques.

The hospital has a long history with robotic-assisted surgery. It was among the first in the United States to adopt an earlier generation of the da Vinci system for minimally invasive procedures back in 2001. Compared with traditional laparoscopy, robotic systems like da Vinci offer several benefits including reduced post-surgical pain, lower blood loss during operations, less scarring, shorter recovery periods for patients, faster return to normal activities, and improved clinical outcomes.
