Vermont reported 15,000 job openings in July 2025, a decrease from 16,000 openings in June, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Acting Regional Commissioner Mark J. Maggi stated that the job openings rate for Vermont was 4.6 percent in July and 4.8 percent the previous month. The national job openings rate stood at 4.3 percent in July and 4.4 percent in June.
The ratio of unemployed persons per job opening in Vermont was 0.6 in July, indicating a tighter labor market compared to the national average of one unemployed person per job opening. In total, thirty-two states and the District of Columbia had ratios lower than the national measure, while thirteen states had higher ratios and five matched the national figure.
In terms of hiring activity, Vermont recorded 11,000 hires and an equal number of separations in July. This compares to June’s figures of 11,000 hires and 12,000 separations. Over the past year ending in July, monthly averages were reported at 12,000 hires and 11,000 separations.
Among those separating from employment in Vermont during July were approximately 6,000 individuals who quit their jobs and about 4,000 who were laid off or discharged—down from June’s figures of 7,000 quits and 5,000 layoffs or discharges. Over the past year quits have averaged around 6,000 per month with a range between 4,000 and 8,000; layoffs and discharges have averaged roughly 4,000 monthly.
The next release of State Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey estimates for August is scheduled for October 22 at 10:00 a.m., Eastern Time.
The data are part of the Bureau’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), which provides insight into labor demand as well as workforce turnover trends across states by combining information from several statistical programs.
